Is it selfish?
So, being a manager in Early Years is tough, at least that’s how I’m finding it. I’ve been doing this now for almost 9 months and it’s been an interesting learning curve, so many things I didn’t understand that I really need to get done. One of my main issues is ensuring my rota is well balanced, it’s still a work in progress and I’m really guilty of just “plugging the gaps” myself instead of looking at creative solutions. But let’s face it, it’s quicker and easier, right?
But it isn’t. What I’m realising, very quickly, is it takes its toll on me mentally and physically and I need to address this as a matter of priority.
Is it selfish to take time out for yourself?
No.
Is it selfish to be kind to yourself?
No.
Is it selfish to sometimes put your needs first?
No.
As a manager I see my role as being the support mechanism for my team, to help and support them, listen to any issues they have and try and make their working life better. I do this because my belief is that a cared-for workforce cares more for the children. I can’t do that effectively if I’m feeling burnt out myself.
I’m lucky though, I have an amazing team who actually care about me too (including one who told me off for forgetting my lunch break this week) and go above and beyond to help where they can.
But, I also need to take time out and nourish myself, having something nice to eat is always good. But equally, we need to nourish our wellbeing. So this weekend is about exercise (Parkrun today and a walk to the nature reserve by the canal tomorrow), and feeling good in my skin with a bit of pampering (yes, boys can enjoy a pamper session too!) I’ve also bought a pyrography hobby kit as I’ve been wanting to try this for ages.
I’m also sipping ice-cold fresh orange juice and enjoying some sunshine, top up the vitamin D while you can.
And please remember, you might be the manager but you’re not indestructible.
Take care of yourself as a matter of priority.
